Hello guys ! Since the Festival de Cannes 2016 has begun, it made me think about movies and also series. So I thought I could share with you two of the series I’ve discovered recently, and which I really like.
To begin there is War&Peace which is a 6 episodes serie. The first episode was broadcast on the 3rd of January 2016, and the last one on the 7th of February. It’s an adaptation of the of the novel of the same name written by Leo Tolstoy, and directed by Tom Harper.The cast includes Lily James, Paul Dano, James Norton…
The book is very thick, and even if I love reading I never had the gut to read it. If you have read War&Peace let me know what you thought about it ! I can’t say if it’s a good adaptation because I haven’t read the book, but I can tell that it’s a good serie.
The plot, the costumes, the script, the actors, the setting… everything is beautifuly done. Characters are endearing, and there are very emotional scenes. Some war passages are tough, but its not called War&Peace for no reason.
I would have liked the serie to go on, but it would have been betraying the book. It has an end, and pursuing the serie would be against Tolstoy’s novel. Plus, the final scene is amazingly done, and I prefer a good early ending than a bad prolonged one.
If you like History, especially the russian one, Napoleonian wars, love stories, if you are looking for a serie which willmove you, then go for it !
The other serie I wanted to talk about is Mr. Selfridge. Ok, it started in 2013 and I’ve discovered it a few months ago, but later is better than never right ? As a fashion addict, I’ve heard about the english store Selfridges, which is pretty much like Harrods. But I didn’t know the story of the store, to be honest I never tried to learn it. But this serie is not only about fashion, it’s about how department stores were born, then copied, and how they’ve changed the fashion industry, which represents billions of Dollars nowadays.
The story is romanced, so it’s not only about the store. It’s not a documentary. Though in my opinion the serie side and the informative one are correctly balanced. The first episode was broadcast on the 2nd of July 2013, and the season 4 ended on the 11th of March 2016. I haven’t seen the last season yet, but I’m eager to find out what will happen ! I don’t know if it will be reconduct for a 5th season… It’s created by Andrew Davies, and the main characters are interpreted by Jeremy Piven, Frances O’Connor, Aisling Loftus which also appears in War&Peace.
It’s for superficial girls you will tell me. Well it’s not. Yes it’s about fashion but it’s not superficial, and I don’t see why a man couldn’t watch it. You will learn a lot about department stores, and since they occup a major place in the economic world, I think it’s important to know the origins of those giants of the world industry. Like I said it’s a serie, so the script is not rigid. There are love stories, money issues… The cast is well chosen, costumes are refined, the scenario rightly written, so it gives to the whole a coherent direction.
This is it for this article, I don’t want to say too much about neither of the series, I wanted to suscitate your curiosity so you will at least watch the trailers, and why not the first episode of each ?
